Tieflings


Tiefling


  • Age: Tieflings mature at the same rate as their mortal heritage counterparts, but usually live a few years longer.
  • Size: Tieflings are of about the same size and build as their mortal heritage counterparts.
  • Speed: Same speed as their mortal heritage counterparts.
  • Languages: Tieflings can speak, read, and write three languages (usually Common, Infernal, and the language of their mortal heritage counterparts).

Darkvision. Thanks to their infernal heritage, tieflings have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. They can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. They can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Hellish Resistance. Tieflings have resistance to fire damage.

Infernal Legacy: Tieflings are able to cast a specific cantrip, and a series of individual spells that can be cast once each in between long rests, unless explicitly noted otherwise. Charisma is the spellcasting ability for all these spells.


Distinct infernal denizens from the The Nine Hells project different effects to the mortal offspring of those they connect with. A tiefling’s heritage reflects these differences.

Tieflings with a blood tie to Zariel, from Avernus, are stronger than the typical tiefling and receive magical abilities that can aid them in battle.


Avernus Tiefling


  • Ability Scores: A score increases by 2 (usually Charisma), and another score increases by 1 (usually Strength).

Legacy of Avernus. Avernus tieflings know the thaumaturgy cantrip. When they reach 3rd level, they can cast the searing smite spell as a 2nd-level spell. When they reach 5th level, they can cast the branding smite spell.


The great city of Dis occupies most of Hell’s second layer. It is a place where secrets are uncovered and shared with the highest bidder, making tieflings tied to Dispater excellent spies and infiltrators.


Dis Tiefling


  • Ability Scores: A score increases by 2 (usually Charisma), and another score increases by 1 (usually Dexterity).

Legacy of Dis. Dis tieflings know the thaumaturgy cantrip. When they reach 3rd level, they can cast the disguise self spell. When they reach 5th level, they can cast the detect thoughts spell.


In Minauros, the great miser Mammon loves coins above all else. Tieflings tied to him excel at gathering and safeguarding material goods.


Minauros Tiefling


  • Ability Scores: A score increases by 2 (usually Charisma), and another score increases by 1 (usually Intelligence).

Legacy of Minauros. Minauros tieflings know the mage hand cantrip. When they reach 3rd level, they can cast the Tenser’s floating disk spell once between a short, or long, rest. When they reach 5th level, they can cast the arcane lock spell, requiring no material component.


From Phlegethos, Fierna is a master manipulator that grants tieflings tied to her forceful personalities.


Phlegethos Tiefling


  • Ability Scores: A score increases by 2 (usually Charisma), and another score increases by 1 (usually Wisdom).

Legacy of Phlegethos. Phlegethos tieflings know the friends cantrip. When they reach 3rd level, they can cast the charm person spell as a 2nd-level spell. When they reach 5th level, they can cast the suggestion spell.


Frozen Stygia is ruled by Levistus, an archdevil known for offering bargains to those who face an inescapable doom.


Stygia Tiefling


  • Ability Scores: A score increases by 2 (usually Charisma), and another score increases by 1 (usually Constitution).

Legacy of Stygia. Stygia tieflings know the ray of frost cantrip. When they reach 3rd level, they can cast the armor of Agathys spell as a 2nd-level spell. When they reach 5th level, they can cast the darkness spell.


From Malbolge, Glasya grants her tieflings magic that is useful for committing all sorts of subterfuge.


Malbolge Tiefling


  • Ability Scores: A score increases by 2 (usually Charisma), and a score increases by 1 (usually Dexterity).

Legacy of Malbolge. Malbolge tieflings know the minor illusion cantrip. When they reach 3rd level, they can cast the disguise self spell. When they reach 5th level, they can cast the invisibility spell.


The crumbling realm of Maladomini is ruled by Baalzebul, who excels at corrupting those whose minor sins can be transformed into acts of damnation. Tieflings linked to this archdevil can corrupt others both physically and psychically.


Baalzebul Tiefling


  • Ability Scores: A score increases by 2 (usually Charisma), and another score increases by 1 (usually Intelligence).

Legacy of Maladomini. Maladomini tieflings know the thaumaturgy cantrip. When they reach 3rd level, they can cast the ray of sickness spell as a 2nd-level spell. When they reach 5th level, they can cast the crown of madness spell.


In the frozen realm of Cania, Mephistopheles offers arcane power to those who entreat with him. Tieflings linked to him master some arcane magic.


Cania Tiefling


  • Ability Scores: A score increases by 2 (usually Charisma), and another score increases by 1 (usually Intelligence).

Legacy of Cania. Cania tieflings know the mage hand cantrip. When they reach 3rd level, they can cast the burning hands spell as a 2nd-level spell. When they reach 5th level, they can cast the flame blade spell.


The tieflings connected to Nessus command the power of fire and darkness, guided by a keener than normal intellect, as befits those linked to Asmodeus himself.


Asmodeus Tiefling


  • Ability Scores: A score increases by 1 (usually Intelligence), and another score increases by 2 (usually Charisma).

Legacy of Nessus. Nessus tieflings know the thaumaturgy cantrip. When they reach 3rd level, they can cast the hellish rebuke spell as a 2nd-level spell. When they reach 5th level, they can cast the darkness spell.
